How to Makeover an Old Lamp to Look Ceramic

My newest obsession is ceramic pottery!! I’ve had this glass lamp sitting in a closet for a while and realized I could upcycle it very easily and make it look like a ceramic lamp!

Stick around while I share with you in 3 easy steps how you can makeover any lamp you have to give it a whole new look.

Materials Needed

  • All Purpose Joint Compound
  • Spatula
  • Sponge Brush
  • Acrylic Paint
  • Sand Paper

Step 1- Spackling

You may be surprised, I actually didn’t do any prep for this step besides making sure the glass was clean.

In other projects I’ve spray painted a coat before this step. I decided to skip the primer step to see how it would hold up.

You will want to fully cover the lamp with a thick layer of the compound. I did use my fingers to smooth it on in some areas.

There’s really no wrong way to apply it.

It will depend on the look you’re going for. If you want it to have lots of texture then you’ll want to apply it on the thicker side. You may also need to do more than one coat.

Step 2- Sanding

Once the joint compound has fully dried (I let mine dry for 24 hours) you’ll sand it down to the finish that you like.

Again, there is no wrong way to do this. If you’re going for a more textured look then you will do a little less sanding.

I wanted more of a smooth look so I sanded it quite a bit.

Step 3- Painting

This is the fun part, you can choose any color for this step. I wanted mine to be white so I chose acrylic white chalk paint. I chose chalk paint for the matte look it will give.

I went back and forth with adding a taupe color for more of an aged look but decided to keep it just white.

Check back in a month I’ll probably have aged it!! 😂

I found this textured shade at Target and thought it would be perfect and I was right.

I’m really happy with how it came out and it fits just perfectly with some of the new decor I picked up at Target.
